After watching the Super Bowl this past Sunday it left me wondering about the current status of the NFL. Just a few things of note that came to mind: Are we seeing the decline of the pro-style, sit in the pocket quarterback and experiencing the rise of the quarterback who is moving, making plays with both his feet and his arm? Ladies and Gentlemen the collegiate level of football isn't producing passers like Manning and Brady anymore, we're seeing players like Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick seize the spotlight as the more prolific passers in the current game. Also is the game changing from big and physical to lean and fast? As I was watching the contest on Sunday night I saw a Seahawks team that wasn't relying on enormous size, but lean players and team speed who completely overwhelmed the Denver offense. Ten years ago defenses relied on 350-pound defensive tackles who could really stuff the run and take up blocks. They also had big linebackers who punished anyone who came across the middle, and their secondary's played man defense. Now you have leaner defensive lines who rely on speed, linebackers that can defend the run as well as the pass and secondary's who play more zone than man. We saw a perfect example of this with Seattle's defense Sunday night. They showed a fast, explosive pass rush, linebackers who defended the run and the pass and a prolific fast secondary. The game as we know is changing.
